GOOD NEWS - Our work, in collaboration with James Durrant and Safa Shoae at Imperial College,  has just been published in Advanced Materials . This is really pleasing as the work has also been highlighted on Radio 4's Inside Science (Thursday 7th November, our bit is at 10 minutes ) and in New Scientist (Thursday 7th November).

Nimra Jalali has just had her first paper accepted in Energy and Environmental Science . This is an outcome of her work that has been supported through Markys Cain at NPL ,investigating ZnO nanostructured energy generators.

Yongfei is making great progress and has had his first paper accepted in Chemistry of Materials.

Sabina Hatch graduated with her PhD (ZnO nanostructured devices) at the Queen Mary summer 2013 graduation (now at UCL) and then Hengky Chang successfully defending his PhD thesis (Photocatalysis of BiFeO[3]) in July bringing my completed PhD students to 13 - well done everyone.

Dr Steve Dunn initially trained in inorganic sensors under the supervision of Prof. Lesley Yellowlees (University of Edinburgh) and then, for his doctoral studies, with Dr R Vasant Kumar in the group of Prof. D Fray FRS (Cambridge University), before shifting focus to functional materials with an emphasis on non-centriosymetric materials such as ferroelectric or piezoelectric materials with Prof. R Whatmore FREng (Cranfield University). In late 2003 he was appointed to the position of Lecturer in Nanostructured Chemistry at Cranfield University before being promoted to Senior Lecturer. He moved to the School of Engineering and Materials Science, Queen Mary University of London (SEMS-QMUL) in Jan 2010 as a senior lecturer in Materials Chemistry.

Dr Dunn’s research group focuses on energy harvesting and scavenging for systems like autonomous self-powered sensors, solar fuels and photovoltaic devices. This has been demonstrated with high impact publications and patents in areas ranging from nanostructured electronic devices (such as photovoltaics and LED) and photocatalysts.

Steve has published 78 articles (Scopus 13th December 2013) with the impact of research from the group being highlighted through a large number invited or secured international talks (6 in 2011 and in 2012, and so far in 2013 there have been 9). Currently Steve has an H-index of 16 and an N-index exceeding 1, placing him in the high performing range for materials science researchers.

He has a proven track record in developing materials and devices for a range of applications and is currently heavily engaged with developed vibration energy harvesting systems for sensors, new surfaces for energy conversion such as solar fuels and other materials that interact with light. His particular expertise is in developing protocol to enhance the understanding of the interactions with a functional material and incoming energy and the resultant products be they a modified chemical species or movement of a charged entity. Recently he has developed an interest in energy scavenging from piezoelectric materials and developing an understanding of the interaction with band structures.
